Easter Gbedu: LAGBUS offers free bus rides to Lagos residents

Lagos – The Lagos State Government on Thursday announced that residents of the state would enjoy free bus rides on Easter Monday, on its LAGBUS Asset Management Ltd buses. This as Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State urged residents to be security conscious and to report unusual situations during the Easter period. Mrs Oluyemi Junaid, the LAGBUS Public Relations Officer in a statement said the free rides are aimed at promoting the use of public transportation, as well as reducing congestion on roads on the day.“The Lagos State Government through LAGBUS will provide free bus rides to residents on Easter Monday, April 21. “It is a move aimed at promoting the use of public transportation, as well as reducing congestion on Lagos roads on the day,’’ the statement said. It said the free bus rides were also to celebrate the annual Lagos Carnival, tagged LASGIDI, which coincided with Easter Monday. According to the statement, the rides will be provided on all LAGBUS routes across the metropolis, between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. The Managing Director of LAGBUS, Mr. Babatunde Disu, urged residents to be careful and moderate, in order to ensure a hitch-free celebration. The government on Wednesday also announced free rides for its buses on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, from Mile 12 to CMS, and the Bus Franchise Scheme (BFS) on the Ikotun-Igando-Iyana-Ipaja-Ikeja routes. Fashola gave the advice while handing over Addo/Addo-Kekere/Lamgbasa/Kajola network of roads and Ajah-Badore Road in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of the state. He urged travellers and residents to be alert and vigilant at motor parks and to be proactive to raise alarm on suspicious characters and situations. “If you see something unusual, say something,’’ he said. The governor also urged the local government to prevail on an individual who wanted to take over a park belonging to Kids Clean Club in the area to apply restraint. Fashola made the appeal after the children of the club made a presentation to the state government that they had a target of planting 50,000 trees in the state in 2014. They had raised an alarm that a new owner was threatening to evict them from the park. “I have told the local government chairman to intervene and let me know what to do to retain your park. “Whoever the person is, I am appealing on behalf of these kids, please stay action, let’s talk,’’ Fashola said. The governor commended the initiative of the kids to begin an early fight against effects of climate change. Commenting on the roads being handed over, he said that public infrastructure were people’s assets that they must maintain. According to Fashola, the newly built roads are expected to last for a minimum of 30 years, if well used and properly maintained. He urged the residents to desist from the habit of trading on the pedestrian walkways as this could push pedestrians, especially children, to the road thereby exposing them to danger. The governor noted that the roads were part of the fulfilment of his electoral promises to residents. “This community alone has earned 11.7 km of inner roads. We are opening up the community, Badore, Ajah and Addo-Kekere, among others. “We are opening up, not only by road, but also by water. The Badore Jetty is virtually completed and very soon we will start ferry service from Badore to Ikorodu,’’ he said. Earlier, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, said that a total of 319 jobs were created in the course of constructing the roads. He noted that the 11.7 km roads were built to international standard with service ducts, pedestrian walkways, manholes, drains and others provided. According to him, the construction is part of the strategic inner road development of the state government to connect communities. “Along the axis is also the Badore Jetty Terminal being constructed by the state government. “When completed, there will be a seamless link of the road and water transportation,’’ he said.
