Journalists in Thailand to be jailed 7 years for using one bit of Reuters'

Amid political chaos and criticism about Thailand's situation, the Royal Thai Navy has sued a local news publishers for allegedly publishing one paragraph of Reuters' article about trafficking and other serious mistreatment of Muslim Rohingya refugees who have fled from Burma by boat.

Australian journalist, Alan Morison and his Thai colleague, Chutima Sidasathian

If convicted, the Australian journalist, Alan Morison, the editor in chief of Phuketwan.com and his Thai colleague, Chutima Sidasathian will be sentenced 7 years in jail.

The charge on these two partners is criminal defamation, it's a case that has implications for everyone who republishes copy online or who re-sends emails or tweets.

This incident would damage the image of Thailand to the world as a democratic country. This indicates that the freedom of media is no more in Thailand.

The Human Rights Watch said that the Royal Thai Navy should drop the case; instead, it should investigate in depth about the trafficking and other serious mistreatment of Rohingy.
